Fall 2005

Hello, friends of SourceHosting.net!

Welcome to the second edition of SourceHosting.news, where we deliver relevant information about SourceHosting.net and software development in general. We're focusing on Subversion this month. This tool has been gaining rapid acceptance, and we're here to help you find out if it's the right solution for you.

With features like file/directory renaming and atomic commits, Subversion is an especially good choice for Java and .Net developers and anyone else who practices code refactoring. Many IDEs, such as Visual Studio .Net and Eclipse, support Subversion so you can use it in a completely integrated environment.

Read on for more information, and keep sending your comments and questions!

  • Subversion Podcasts

Have you started listening to podcasts yet? There are plenty of entertainment podcasts out there, but there are technology-related ones, too.

So pick up an MP3 player and head over to expert developer Tim Shadel's site. Tim has a blog with a series of podcasts that discuss various software development topics and a couple of episodes specifically about Subversion and how he and his company use the tool for Java development.

It's a great way to learn something while commuting to work!

    Web-enabling Your Subversion Repository

You may have noticed that SourceHosting.net offers a free feature called WebSVN that works with your Subversion repository. Using WebSVN, SourceHosting.net securely exposes your Subversion repository through a web browser - perfect for team members who want to view code changes online without having to install a Subversion client.

Need Extra Cash? Referral Bonus Program Extended

The SourceHosting.net referral bonus has been extended until December 31st, so keep telling your colleagues about us. For each new client that you refer who has an account for at least 3 months, you'll earn $50!

    Greg Larkin

    Q: Hey Greg,

We've been using your CVS hosting service for a couple of years, but we really need the file renaming capability of Subversion.

How do we upgrade to Subversion hosting and preserve our version history at the same time?

A: It's no problem with the cvs2svn script!
